Unfortunately the time is not as ample as it should be due to this virus
spreading around so the judges have tried their best to find a time for
each and one of you.
Here's the culling as it stands:
Fuxia WINNER VS Mat
Fuxia: Like the design of the creature! The only thing I miss is the same painterly finish on the lighting effects, what you have on the creature itself. Mat: The perspective throws me off a bit with the hands, as it seems we almost have three different vantage points and perspective grid on your image. It would be also great to give the texture of the creature a bit love with some additional elements, like moss, weathering and such.
In the assignment it says beast, so I would have loved to see less humanoid solutions, more craziness. That having been said Ithink Fuxia did incorporate the elemental idea a little better. Cheers!
Fuxia, I think you did a great job making the creature very powerful and i like the mixture of the tornado and the lightnings! cool colorchoice too! Mat I really like yours too, what I especially like is the added connection with humans, which gives it a new layer, thats why i give you the point! Good job both of you!
Fuxia- Very cool idea, design and visualization here! Would love to see some extra effects and lighting to sell the cool electric/magic you started to hint at here to push it over the top. Mat- Very cool idea and sense of scale here! Would love to see more attention to the material indication here to help differentiate the different objects in the scene more to help sell the idea.
MontanaT WINNER VS NanoRhino
MontanaT: Love everything in this one! Cool and well executed creature design and nice handling of focal points. NanoRhino: Cool creature and storytelling! My only comment would be to fix the back leg. I understand you wanted to strengthen the foreshortening, but its a bit too extreme to our perspective and at the moment its closer to feel like a third bit bigger arm than a leg.
Again, I feel the elemental concept comes through better, and the lighting sets off the drama
WINNER / Montana T: Love your mood here! @Nano: Great piece as well!
Both of the illustrations are great! Nano, i like how you played with perspective and how you put that focus is really cool too! Ill give it to Montana though. I can almost feel the heat coming from those creatures. splendid rendering too!
MontanaT- Absolutely love the moody lighting and vibe here, very well done! Everything is working really well here, i think the only other thing i might do is a little more indication in the background or find a way to emphasize here glowing hand a little more, but its pretty minor, really cool image. NanoRhino- Very cool image and idea here! Would love to see a little more material indication in the objects of the scene to help sell the idea more.
Andart WINNER VS Avidite
Andart: Cool creature design, love the broken through horns! Only two notes here: 1. The mountain side of right conflicts with your creature a bit. Although it adds depth, but really fights with the silhouette and readability of the creature's horns. 2. The "sand-swoosh" in front of the creature is a cool effect, but makes it hard to understand its anatomy. Avidite: Nice handling of materials and good distribution of details! To be honest, I would expect a bit more on the design side, you could play with more extreme proportions for example. I could also imagine to introduce a secondary color to the background to pop the creature a bit more.
The ambiguity here plays to Andart's strength. The horns, playing on the concept of a goat, which is easilut tied in with mountains, so pulls in the elemental idea.
uuuuh this is so tough! Andart this is an interesting design and i like how you added the bouncelight for example, great rendering!. Avidite: i think the creature looks awesome and very memorable, which is why i give it to you!
Andart- Excellent scene, composition, lighting and environment here! Really helps sell the creature and idea very well. Would love to see some more idea development and design on the creature/elemental itself however, to turn it into something more iconic. Avidite- Really cool idea and design here, would love to see a bit more attention to materials throughout the image to really push it over the top but the idea and design is very strong and easy to understand. If i saw it in a game i would know exactly what it is.
Atzgee WINNER VS Jonathanfernandes
Atzgee: The whole scene looks cool, but facing of the character is a bit confusing. Not exactly sure whats happening with her (?) face and body to be honest. You have to communicate your ideas a bit more clearly to make sure everybody understands them the same way. Jonathanfernandes: I think you wanted to show a bit too much with this one. It simply has too many character, shapes, colors and feels that you ran out of time a bit and could not clarify everything you wanted.
Here Jonathan has married concept and colors quite effectively, even if he might have gona a little ambitious, bot allowing time to render and detail as much as Atzgee, but I do feel like the core concept comes through better
@Atzgee / WINNER: Love the mood! @Jonathan: Every color of the spectrum, with a centered composition kind of killed the focus in this piece. Great ambitious work nonetheless.
Atzgee. This is great! I love how you obviously did your research and i see some rendering of ice that i havent seen much before! great moody lighting too. I like it! Jonathans image is just so epic, and it has a great composition, i have to give you my point!
Atzgee- Excellent mood and lighting here, really creates and interesting moment and sells the idea very well. Would love to see more attention put into the material indication/rendering in your focal point to help sell the idea even more. Jonathanfernandes- Amazing idea here! Would just love to see more time put into rendering and detailing out all the characters and creatures you have created in your scene, lot of cool ideas throughout.
Paula WINNER VS Yannickgolding
Paula: Great mood and execution! Feel like areal keyframe from an anime, which is awesome! The only thing I would add is a bit more flat shading / lighting on the characters thats all. Yannickgolding: Cool creature, but I would expect a bit more at this stage. I could imagine some sort of background to show the creature in a situation, but even the creature itself seems unfinished.
nice fun moment with many interacting characters.
Paula! I love this piece a ton, and while the chinese dragons are traditionaly element-referenced, I gotta give it to Yannickgolding, this is such an interesting take on the concept, a marrying of two concepts, and I adore it.
Both were great pieces, with nothing in common. I had to chose, and I went for the more narrative pice of Paula. Excellent work both!
Its complicated because both are so different. Yannick i really love some of the shapes and textures you have been going on there! But Paulas piece is also fantastic, the characters are awesome, the storytelling and perspective. all in all is a super solid illustration! its a winner.
Paula- Fantastic composition, style and idea here! Feels like a frame out of a cool anime movie. Only thing i might do is have a little more light from the outside affecting the characters near the window. Yannickgolding- Really cool idea here! Love the rockfish elemental idea, would be cool to see this thing in some sort of dramatic composition to help sell your cool design even more.
Zerolemons VS Krasgar WINNER
Zerolemons: Not exactly sure whats happening, but I would need a bit more in terms of design, than a giant orangutan with a glowing beard. Other than that the scene looks well balanced with clear focal points, just dont really understand the story itself. Krasgar: Awesome and unique design! Love the unusual mix of rock and floating water and its really well painted. No comment on this one! :)
interesting narrative moment
As with previous ones, I think Krasgar's concept here is nearly unbeatable. This is glorious
Wow love this piece @Krasgar! The colors are great, the different textures work perfectly, the composition. Excellent!
I love your versions of this creatures! Both of them! <3 Krasgar. I love the mix of elements and the realistic light situation. the materials are looking convincing! Zerolemons: I think its a beautiful story and the technique is awesome as well! For the extra layer of story I will give you my point. Great job you guys!
Zerolemons- Fantastic composition, lighting, mood and idea here! Love the take on the elemental being some sort of forest guardian taking care of the other animals. Would love to see a bit more attention to material indication in the scene to help bring it over the top even more. Krasgar- Simple scene but excellent design idea! Really really cool take on the elemental, would love to see the design of the water element pushed even further, maybe there are bigger dinosaur like spines down the back, pushing things slightly more fantastical, but as is this is a very cool design idea!
MYart WINNER VS Tamas.dako
Tamas, I think is a beautiful rendering of different ideas for creatures! I can see you based some of them on real animals, its good to do some research, i think it would help your materials if youd to the same research, i definitely think they could be pushed more :) Ill give my point to MYart in the end, for putting everything together in a beautiful illustration. love the painterly brushstrokes as well
MYart- Excellent mood, composition and idea here, really cool storytelling. Would love to see a little more emphasis on turning the fire into some kind of menacing form but i do also like how subtle is it. Great job! Tamas.dako- Really cool ideas and exploration here! Would love to see a couple of these selected and put into some sort of cool/dramatic moment to sell your favorite idea out of them more.
MYart: Cool scene overall! The only thing I would need is a bit more secondary lighting on the buildings and a bit more clarification on the elemental. At the moment it can also be just a big wall of fire, if I dont know what to look for. Tamas.dako: Nice design exercise, but feels a bit like your first sketching round. I would love to see one of them detailed further, posed and part of an illustration / story.
The amount of work on Tamos' side is impressive, but MYart did a fantastic work in taking a simple concept and marrying it with a complex context. Great work
Savorybaconist VS Fer Sancho WINNER
probably staging the bis cloud character a bitter better would have even improved this nice and evocative moment painting.
Savourybaconist: I think the illustration works extremely well. Love how you give a bigger picture with adding this background and bringing the focus to the mouth of the creature with that saturation you added! Really well done!! Fer Sancho: this is absolutely stunning in all its ways, composition, stylization and everything. Even though both images are masterful I need to give my point to Fer Sancho.
Savourybaconist- Really badass moment and scene here, really dramatic lighting and mood and sells the idea well. Would love to see a bit more material indication and rendering in the focal area to help sell the idea even more, maybe some dramatic cold effect coming out of the dragons mouth? Few Sancho- Fantastic idea and take on the subject, really charming style and execution here as well, very unique and feels like an animated film i would love to watch!
Savourybaconist: Nice image, but it feels too much like a nightwalker dragon copy from GoT. Sorry, but I would expect more design thinking at this stage of the contest. Fer Sancho: Beautiful illustration and great design! Love small plane as an additional element to show scale. No comment here, would totally hang this on my wall! :)
Here it is a run between similar concepts, but I must say that the flying whale gets the fantastical edge, and juxtaposed with the plane it gives a lovely link to the real world, or at least the idea of it.
WINNER @Fer Sancho: A very different take from everything else, strong composition! I dig that piece!
IrinaFrench VS Brandon Crampton WINNER
Irina French , nice work but your stones in the FG really fight for attention with your figure / brandon nice dynamic moment with balances color palette. I way to improve drama could be letting the fg character react more clearly to the approaching monster.
Guys, both of those illustrations are great, and I hope you know that! Its hard to compare them in terms of technique, you both did really good! Brandon, i especially like how you rendered the scales. but in the end of the day I will give my point to Irina. I like how it really makes me wonder about this creature, if people treat it like some kind of god. its interesting and has a good twist!
IrinaFrench- Really cool story moment captured here! Would love to see some more design development on the elemental in back and also some more material indication and detail on the scene overall. Brandon Crampton- Cool idea and execution here, very dramatic and sells the idea very well.
IrinaFrench: Cool composition and overall idea, but the design of your elemental seems a bit too friendly, like a giant snowman (sorry!). I would expect a much more threatening air elemental based on the other part of the image (druid, stormclouds, etc.). Brandon Crampton: Really cool image, almost like a Riot splash art! The only thing, what distracts me is the blurred area at the bottom. I know you wanted to drive the focus on the creatures head, but the two figures are around the same distance from the camera as the head... I would bring some clarity to them and even connect them with the elemental with the creature is looking at them.
Again I'm loving the corporeal concept of the sky gathering into a titan. It feels like a scene from a movie. Great elemental conecpt.
Both are great work! Hard to chose.
Deerbard WINNER VS Slumpen
This is a hard decision and I thought about it a lot! Deerbard: I like how you put a different twist to the topic. the creature is very menacing as well. Slumpen, I like how you put so much action into this piece, its great to see the surroundings and the expression! its pure terror! I think i like the creature of Deerbard better, Slumpens creature is more undefined, though slumpen gives the creature more story and background with the context around, so i give Slumpen my point. But this was really hard decision, you guys! ;_;
Deerbard- Really original and compelling idea here, love the take on an elemental. Would love to see some more attention to material indication and details around the scene to bring things to life more but the idea and scene is already working well. Slumpen- Really dramatic moment and idea here! Would love to see a bit more attention to material indication, VFX and details here to help sell the idea of this electric creature attacking the people.
Deerbard: Like the design of the robot, but the silhouette and storytelling would need more clarity. If you could lighten the sky a bit and put some mist between the robot and the guy, your whole image would read much more clearly. Slumpen: Really cool design and scene, but would expect a much cleaner finish for something like this. Try to look into the work of concept designers doing keyframes for movies and learn about what tools you need to achieve that quality (photos, textures, 3d, fine digital painting techniques, etc.).
The world building here is great. Demon oven robot coal burning things have brought the apocalypse, great work :D
@Deerbard, whatever this shit is, it looks like it's a winner!
Grija WINNER VS Omid
These are really fun illustrations! Omid: I want to play a videogame with this guy! Loving the bright colors in it! I think you could improve your image by looking more at references. Unless you want a comical aspect to it, his arms could definitely use some kind of definition and tension. Sometimes even making a photo of yourself in the mirror its all it needs! I simply love the mood of Grijas painting, and it feels very epic, Grija wins.
Grija- Really nice graphic composition here, i really like the more subtle take on the elemental i think that works well here. Would love to see a bit more attention to material indication and details in the scene to help sell the idea even more. Omid- Really dramatic moment and idea here! Would love to see a bit more idea development on the elemental here to push it into something more fantastical.
Grija: Love the design and the epic scale on this one! The only thing I miss is the same quality in painting on the rest of the image, what you did on the dragon head. Omid: Like the head design of the creature, but anatomy and pose of the arms and upper body really throws me off. You also added a bit too much effect to the piece, what becomes overwhelming and distracts me from the design.
Range, impact, concept. It all works here, liking the idea of this being how dragons show up in the world, as manifestations in elements.
When looking at the images to judge, the first thing we see are the thumbnails. And I usually know which one gets my vote just by looking at them in small size. The colors, the composition and narrative dynamics are already obvious at small size. WINNER @Grija, excellent work!
Jeffp VS Artofjim VS Hetman.Kenney WINNER
Jim: wohooo, this looks like an expedition the guy will regret! ;) love how its not too obvious with the first look. I think the illustration is solid, but Hetmans illustration is really an eyecatcher will all those characters and story. Hetman is the winner of this round.
Artofjim- Really cool idea and execution here, the design of the elemental is also looking very cool. Would love to see a bit more lighting and depth to the scene to help sell the idea even more. Hetman.Kenny- Really cool idea and execution here! The composition and story moment really help sell the idea here very well. A little more material indication and details could help sell the idea even more.
Artofjim: Cool scene, but would need a bit more clarification on the environment and the creaturei itself. At the moment its really hard to differentiate the two. Hetman.Kenney: Cool scene and painting quality! The only thing I miss is an extra level of dynamism with the running creature and the effect of it's powers on it's surroundings.
This is a rather lovely use of a non-typical chinese mythological creature, or so I think. I think using it as a manifestation of a storm, and it's results on the road. Good work
Good job on both pieces! WINNER is Hetman, I love the very lively scene!
